Hello
This is a collection of 2 Minute Moodles – an attempt to simplify and show how to use a range of Moodle features. The list will grow as I find time to cook some more.
The tutorials try not to assume too much previous knowledge and are presented for the pragmatical and not necessarily tech-savy users (Moodle purists please excuse). They are a bit like that product I got the pun from – something quick and simple to get you going.
A big thank you to Julian “Moodleman” Ridden for the original 2 Minute Moodles graphic.
Did you know all these clips are now in clear, HD channel at Vimeo? Please, help yourself here.
The first batch is about the basic of Moodle.
Let’s start with a 5 minute introduction to Moodle as a Lego analogy – what is it, what are its main features, the thinking behind it and some facts on the world of Moodle – watch video (length 5:04)
There is a shorter version of ‘Moodle explained using Lego”? – (watch video – length 2:43) or even a slideshow - click here to access it.
This clip explains the main ‘roles’ of people in Moodle – worth a watch to get the idea – (watch video - length 2:42)
Then, you are ready to login (at least the community of Belmont City College…) – (watch video – length 1:14)
Once logged in, you can start creating a course – here is how you do that – (watch video – length 7:32)
Students can enrol themselves or you can specify who and when gets in – (watch video – length 4:29)
For more basic information about the enrolment options, see this clip – (watch video – length 3:35)
Ready to edit your course? See the clip about the magic ‘Turn editing on’ button – (watch video – length 4:45)
The second batch of 2 Minute Moodles looks at how to work with files, folders and other common starting features.
See how to navigate through a Moodle site using ‘breadcrumbs’ – watch video (length 2:48)
Learn how to keep an eye on the activity of course participants – watch video (length 4:11)
Just how to add files as a teacher (or administrator) – watch video (length 3:17)
Adding labels can be very handy to break up the screen – watch video (length 1:33)
Add a simple text page – watch video (length 1:32)
To answer a popular question ‘how do I add a website link’ watch this clip – watch video (length 2:36)
See how quite simple it is to add your own webpage to your course – watch video (length 6:07)
Just how do you de-clutter the screen and display a folder of resource – watch video (length 2:04)
For some general info and tips on working with files and folders have a look below – watch video (length 2:39)
How to embed a video from YouTube or other video sharing sites – watch video (length 2:29)
How to add a video to a webpage in Moodle – watch video (length 2:08)
The third batch looks at how to use popular communication tools in Moodle
Have a look how to open a (very popular) chatroom – watch video (length 2:34)
See how simple it really is to set up and run a forum (examples provided) - watch video (length 6:46)
Learn how to open a dialogue (non-standard in Moodle 1.9 but useful, examples) – watch video (length 5:23)
When enabled, messaging in Moodle is pretty easy - watch video (length 2:14)
The humble wiki is a hugely versatile staple of Moodle - watch video (length 6:36)
Ever experienced the effect of blogs on students’ literacy? Here is how to blog with Moodle - watch video (length 3:04)
The fourth batch covers Moodle’s main evaluation tools.
Set up a choice activity, often a starting point for many Moodlers – watch video (length 5:05)
Quizzes in Moodle are renowned for their range of options, flexibility and management tools. See it for yourself – watch video (length 11:21; not quite 2 minutes I know…)
Setting, submission and management of assignments in Moodle is not difficult – watch video (length 8:07)
Quick and sassy poll often has all we need to quickly gather accurate data – watch video (length 2:46)
And here is a clip on that Swiss Army Knife of tools called database (a communication, collaboration and evaluation tool) – watch video (length 12:04)
Note: This is not an exhustive list of evaluation tools in Moodle, merely a list of most used tools at our school. Lesson, Workshop and Survey are standard features of Moodle that can be used in evaluation but are not described here ( maybe another time…). In addition, Moodle database if full of goodies in this department, well worth a look.

A veritable repository of goodies…thanks!
What program did you use to capture your very informative video clips?
many thanks for a fantastic resourse
As I work at a college that has just been issued Moodle as a replacement for our old Blackboard VLE. I have found your tutorials invaluable in learning how it works and passing the information onto the rest of my peers.
As always, an awesome repository of educational goodness

Excellent!
Does anyone know how to add an image in Moodle that when clicked opens a window and begins playing a video? (wmv) When I set it up: insert image, and link it to a video to open in a new page, it does not work. I click the photo and nothing happens. Sometimes after setting it up i set the image and below it the video clip. Suggestions?
When I play with the html (remove image part) I see it in Internet Explorer (but not the way I want it) but not in Firefox.

Hi Tomaz – Great videos! We’ve been highlighting them to users for a long time.
I’ve just noticed that techertube has pulled a fast one and completely changed the way videos are referenced. For example I think http://www.teachertube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=db28ef127627901de291 is now http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=47462&title=Poll_in_Moodle

I am experimenting with eportfolios in Moodle and have had Exabis installed. Unfortunately the sharing doesn’t work for me. Do you know the answer or could you recommend an alternative to Exabis please.
Just exploring Moodles and found your site – what a great resource.
I have one problem, I am on Satellite so watching videos live is almost impossible – I usually have to download them then play them from the hard drive.
Is there any way I can save your 2 minute moodles to my hard drive so I can watch them?
Will also mean I can watch them a couple of times as the Satellite download limit is quite small.
Thanks
Don,
Yes, there is a way to download them!
You need to ose Firefox (a free download) and a download add-on such as Download Helper. These will let you download embedded videos from any site, including YouTube and Vimeo.
Good luck,
Guido
I have just viewed “The Heart of Moodle.” Excellent! May I have your permission to use this in my work with teachers? I would like to prepare something similar but without the promotion for a Moodle event at the conclusion.
Thank you.

I don’t know if Tomaz still reads this, but for others who somehow find their way here, like me….
The tutorials I need are for wider application: business and certainly not too academic! (Won’t frighten the chickens!)
The excellent production of the demo called “Water!” is spot-on!
As a retired international management counsellor and designer of many RLT packages, I really do understand the problems in training people into new directions!
However, being forced out of retirement, I can only say that if this technology had been available at any price 30 years ago, I may not have retired!
Here is my research result to date:
1. Moodle AND Tomaz’ great “:Water” example. ( I notice someone else a long time ago asked what visual program he used but no answer. I’d like to know, too)
2. Kaltura.com or .org (for freebie) seems like a great service for video production and says it is Moodle compatible.
3. The same erroneous approach to teaching still exists. Pedagogy/didactics has not evolved at all, in my opinion, since I last was involved. Understandable, because properly effected the use of quality visual instruction would virtually eliminate the Formal Education System.
The truth is that “natural” teachers are like diamonds. You can improve an unnatural voice, but you can’t make a great singer, as an example. You can only make a bad singer a bit less bad.
However, by using the latest great technology available, you can “capture” the great examples and simply put them in your videos. Guess what? Those really capable teachers are naturals and can’t help it – they’ll usually do it pro bono (free).
I would appreciate anyone who has been down the commercialisation route passing on any hints.

Hi there, Thomas:
I, as I have just discovered it, am a new user of your opera. I am planning to use it in the university where I work at Tabasco, Mexico in a project related with the virtual university based on Moodle.
The videos are fantastic, but, must of the teachers mate of the university don´t speak english. Is there a posibility that you have had included “close caption” for each video?
I will be very eager seeking your response.
Jesús Herrera
Hi Jesus
Sorry about late reply, been away. No close captions on clips but you can create your own in the language of you choice.
Best wishes with your project(s).
Tomaz
